How to choose the right thread for making a DIY jewelry piece?

The choice of thread directly affects the strength, flexibility, and durability of the jewelry. Each type of thread serves a specific purpose and should be selected based on the beads, the technique used, and the final piece.

The elastic thread is ideal for bracelets without clasps. It allows easy wearing of the jewelry while maintaining excellent flexibility. Its diameter should be suited to the weight of the beads used, especially with natural stones.

The nylon thread is appreciated for its discretion and flexibility. Transparent or colored, it is perfect for floating necklaces, lightweight assemblies, and certain weaving techniques.

High-strength braided threads like FireLine or other weaving threads are particularly recommended for creations using seed beads or Miyuki beads. Their small diameter allows multiple passes through the beads while maintaining excellent strength.

For natural stone necklaces or heavier creations, steel-coated cables generally offer the best long-term durability and reduce the risk of breakage.

FAQs

What thread should I use to make a natural bead bracelet?

For a stretch bracelet, elastic thread is the most commonly used solution. For natural stones measuring 6 to 10 mm, it is recommended to use a quality elastic suitable for the weight of the beads. For a bracelet with a clasp, a sheathed steel cable will generally provide greater security and durability.

What's the difference between a nylon thread, an elastic thread, and a sheathed cable?

Nylon thread is flexible and discreet, ideal for lightweight assemblies. Elastic thread allows for the creation of bracelets without clasps thanks to its stretchy capacity. Coated wire consists of several metal strands covered with a protective sheath; it offers superior resistance for heavy necklaces, natural stones, and creations intended to be worn frequently.

What diameter of wire should I choose based on my beads?

The diameter mainly depends on the drill hole. Small seed beads often require wires between 0.10 and 0.20 mm. Natural beads measuring 6 to 8 mm generally accept wires of 0.5 to 1 mm depending on their drilling. It is always advisable to check the hole diameter indicated on the product sheets before choosing your wire.
